As creators, we love the freedom to create and express ourselves
We’re creators because:
01 — We love our freedom and independence
Let’s face it. We don’t love the 9-5. We want to be able to work where we want, when we want, doing what we want. And it’s very satisfying to take control of our own financial future.
02 — We want to pursue our passions
We love the ability to provide for ourselves and our families by sharing the things we love with others — whether that’s teaching others how to cook, making music, or playing video games.
03 — We love to find and build community
It’s very rewarding to build a loyal community of followers and subscribers — as well as relationships with fellow creators — who share the same values and interests as us.
04 — We want to make a difference
Having a platform allows us to make a positive and significant impact in others’ lives. We have the power to inform, inspire, and influence others to take action that brings more joy and meaning to their lives.
05 — We love a challenge
We love the feeling of trying something new and seeing the rewards of our hard work and effort. Pushing ourselves to do better — to be better — and experiencing growth in our own work and personal lives brings us a lot of joy.
06 — We desire recognition
Whether it’s a new follower, viewer, subscriber, or a YouTube Play Button, recognition for the content we create brings us a tremendous amount of joy. Because in the end, we all hold a deep desire to know that what we say matters.
HARSH REALITY CHECK:
Being a content creator is unpredictable, overwhelming, and may have you questioning yourself at every turn
Why being a creator is hard:
01 — We get burned out
The constant juggle between creating great content (and everything else that comes with it), the sometimes long hours and late nights, not to mention everything else in our lives (like family and/or other jobs) can leave little room for rest and relaxation. Before long, jumping on to a livestream or creating a video, which normally excites us, can start to feel like a chore.
02 — It’s not just about good content
Most of us became content creators because we were passionate about something and started sharing it online. But great content alone isn’t enough to sustain being a full-time creator. There are lots of other tasks we need to do that we struggle with — usually because we feel we don’t have time, don’t know how, or flat out aren’t interested in doing it.
03 — It’s an emotional rollercoaster
Life as a content creator isn’t always consistent. Sometimes we feel like we’re absolutely crushing it, content goes viral, we get lots of raids on Twitch, and we feel like we can do anything! Other days we may feel stuck, criticized, and full of self-doubt, leading to…
04 — We think we’re not good enough
It’s amazing to feel like we’re growing and succeeding. But when we see others who we think are doing better than we are, it’s easy to fall into the trap into believing we’re doing something wrong, or that we’re not good enough. That maybe we should just quit.
05 — Imposter Syndrome
When times are tough and we’re hitting our lows as a content creator, we sometimes feel like we don’t deserve our success, we don’t deserve our loyal fans, and we fear that people will find out that we’re not really the amazing person they think we are. That we’re a fraud. And we fear people will abandon and/or ridicule us for it.
06 — We fear that we don’t matter
After we hit growth slumps, compare ourselves to others, and imposter syndrome settles in, it’s easy for us to go to the darkest place of all — believing that what we do doesn’t matter. What we say doesn’t matter. That we don’t matter.
THE GOOD NEWS:
You’re not the only content creator feeling this way. These struggles are perfectly normal — and you don’t have to do it alone
